International Gamers Award 2004
Memoir '44 earned the award in the 2-player category. Using the system pioneered by designer Richard Borg in the 1999 release Battle Cry, Memoir '44 recreates over a dozen battles connected with the D-Day invasions of World War II. Released by Days of Wonder, the game is filled with over one hundred detailed miniatures, and the board itself can be tailored to recreate the famous battlefields surrounding the Normandy landings. Easy-to-learn rules and fast-playing action are coupled with critical choices and numerous strategies, all resulting in a game that will be played and enjoyed over and over again.
"Memoir 44" is an impressive package that combines Days of Wonder's trademark production quality with straightforward yet sophisticated rules, compact playing time, immense variability, tactical breadth, and some good honest lettin' the dice fly at close quarters. Advanced scenarios take a bit of setting up, but it's well worth it. The card-based battle system leaves plenty of options open, but also allows players to repeat a scenario with very different results. Especially given the potential for expansion, this game is highly recommended for all "tableside generals".

Great WWII game, the card system throws in a neat element of chance (on top of the dice of course) but still allows the player to ply their strategies. fairly quick gameplay allows for back to back matches in a single sitting.
